Perched near the 600 foot level at the northern end of Oregon 's Eola Hills, Domaine Coteau's vineyard parcels slope south and east, providing excellent exposure for ripening Pinot Noir (the famous of Burgundy 's wine grapes). The first vineyard parcel was planted in 1996 with additional plantings in 1998 and 1999. Later parcels were planted exclusively with Dijon clones (i.e., 113, 114, 115, 667, and 777) using both 3309C and 101-14 rootstocks. Soils at the Domaine are almost exclusively classified as Nekia (a red, volcanic, well-drained soil about two to three feet deep over broken basalt rock). Hillside soils such as Nekia are fairly low in fertility and thus help the vine concentrate on fruit production as opposed to vegetative growth during the growing season.
