Chardonnay clusters on the vine.

When people think of the Willamette Valley, Pinot noir often comes to mind first. But increasingly, wine lovers, sommeliers, and critics around the world are turning their attention to another standout from our region: Chardonnay.

If you’ve been hearing more about Willamette Valley Chardonnay , you’re not alone. Long celebrated for Pinot noir, our region is also earning well-deserved recognition for Chardonnay that is every bit as compelling, both from critics and from wine lovers discovering it for themselves.

Often called a “winemaker’s grape,” Chardonnay is remarkably versatile, reflecting both place and technique. Around the world, it ranges from bright and mineral-driven to rich and oak-influenced. In the Willamette Valley, our cool climate and thoughtful craftsmanship strike a beautiful balance: vibrant acidity, layered texture, and nuanced complexity, with freshness always at the forefront. The result is a style that feels refined, expressive, and distinctly of this place.

Critics are taking notice.

"Oregon chardonnay has arrived with a level of site-specific transparency that rivals the best in the world," said Courtney Humiston, Oregon Reviewer for James Suckling.

That sentiment has been echoed across the wine world. VinePair named the Willamette Valley one of the world’s top Chardonnay regions, further solidifying the category’s growing reputation on the global stage. In separate 2025 coverage, VinePair also praised the region’s diversity of style, writing, “What really blew us away this year were the distinct expressions of Chardonnay from across the Willamette Valley, ranging from mineral and bright to rich and savory.”

Meanwhile, Wine Spectator noted: “And Willamette Valley, the preeminent wine region in the state, has made its reputation on Pinot Noir. But its Chardonnay is proving to be equally exciting."

A Landmark Moment for Oregon Chardonnay

Bethel Heights 100 Chardonnay Decanter

Perhaps one of the most defining moments yet for Oregon Chardonnay came recently when the 2023 The High Wire Chardonnay from Bethel Heights Vineyard earned a perfect 100-point score from Decanter, the first Oregon wine ever to receive that distinction from the publication.

The review was written by esteemed North American Editor Clive Pursehouse, who reflected not only on the wine itself, but on the legacy behind it:

“The story of this bottle, wrapped up in the name, the old vines, the work that Ben’s parents, his aunt and uncle did to establish both the Valley and the Eola-Amity Hills—that’s all a part of the beauty of this wine, in my opinion. It’s a wine that speaks to that family’s legacy and importance. The challenges of the Wente clone early on, and the sweet spot that it is clearly sitting in now, all of that background context—it all came together to make what is, in my opinion, a perfect bottle of Oregon Chardonnay.”

Moments like these are exciting not simply because of accolades, but because they reflect years of dedication from growers and winemakers across the region who have quietly believed in the potential of Chardonnay for decades.
